Whether you’re a stay-at-home mom, student, working professional, or perhaps even a tourist in Chilliwack, in today’s world we are always rushing. Even when we choose a leisure activity, we often don’t take time to slow down, indulge our senses, and really enjoy the moment we are in.
Nature presents the ultimate locations for mindfulness and meditation, and here in Chilliwack we are gifted with one of the most beautiful and abundant landscapes on the planet. Today, I’m going to walk you through 4 places to visit in Chilliwack, that present you with the opportunity to replenish your mind, body, and soul.
If you live in the Fraser Valley, you are likely familiar with Bridal Falls. If so, try letting go of familiarity, and approach this beautiful place in a posture of meditation. This 1 km loop, just East of Chilliwack, offers a rewarding experience that is accessible for people from all levels of fitness.
Upon entering the dense forest, notice the cooler temperature provided by the lush canopy of trees above you. Watch how the sunlight filters through those trees. Listen to the sound of birds, as you take in the unique landscape of ferns and moss covered trees. Consider how old some of these giant trees must be, with their giant trunks and wide reaching roots. As you ascend, you’ll see streams of water all around you. Small bridges provide you the opportunity to pause, and reflect only on the sound of rushing water as you breathe in the crisp, fresh air. Allow yourself some childlike curiosity as you venture, perhaps peeking inside of hollow logs or taking a moment to place your hand on a mossy trunk.
When you reach the waterfall, find yourself a private rock, log, or tucked away space to be still. Consider placing your bare feet in the cold water. There are so many sensations and sights to be aware of, whether you choose to be still or perhaps practice some yoga moves. See where the awe inspiring sight of the 60 meter fall, cascading over smooth rock takes you.
If you’re a long time resident of Chilliwack, you will certainly remember and miss the amazing Minter Gardens. Gwen Vaughan Park is a tucked away retreat off of Hope River Road, that offers a smaller, but beautiful garden walk. The garden area is in front of a pristine heritage home on the property, but open to the public. It’s behind the public garden, where plot owners are often tending to their flowers and vegetables.
Colorful blooms are everywhere in the spring, and there’s a gorgeous rose garden in the summer. Several benches are available where you could sit and meditate, or you may want to bring a blanket to tuck yourself in somewhere private. Honestly though, this garden is usually a quiet spot, without interruptions or watching eyes. This makes it perfect for quiet, peaceful meditation. You may want to take pictures as a way of slowing down and truly enjoying each unique blossom.
Movement and mindfulness meditation actually go wonderfully together. I’ve found that the rhythmic movement of cycling matched with a steady breathing rate is an activity that naturally brings you to a mindful state. The only thing you need to focus on is the continual peddling of your legs, and the amazing views that surround you. There is so much farmland to be explored in Chilliwack, whether in Yarrow, Greendale, or all the space between Prest Road and Annis Road. You’ll pass open fields with amazing mountain views, and be greeted by sheep, horses, cows, and goats. Even in the heat, biking provides a cool breeze that feels so good. Take whatever bike you have, and go freely explore, without any agenda. Enjoy the quiet that nature provides, and get in touch with both nature and your body.
Not the right weather for outdoor meditation? Visit Luna Float, the first Float Therapy Wellness Centre in Chilliwack.
If you want to experience muscle tension release and the deepest quiet you have ever known- (loud kids anyone!?) then Float Therapy is a must try. Ever used Epsom salt in a bath to ease muscle aches, and aid you in sleep and relaxation? Luna Float’s tanks have 1100 pounds of Epsom salt, which is natural magnesium, that allows your body to float without any effort at all.
Floating in a lake or pool is super relaxing, but experiencing this weightless sensation without effort is sublime. Since the goal is sensory deprivation, the water is warmed to body temperature. You should be completely comfortable and free from distractions.
If absolute silence doesn’t sound blissful to you, simply let the staff know to play meditative music for you, or even connect your own Bluetooth device to hear your favorite relaxing playlist.
